Cox Box Maintenance during the Pandemic

Cox boxes that are turned on, their headsets, and chargers in two organized lines.

Has your cox box been plugged in at the boathouse for the last few months because you left it charged back in March with a sliver of hope that you might actually take a coxed boat out soon? RUN TO THE BOATHOUSE NOW AND UNPLUG!

Well, maybe it’s not that dramatic, but let’s take a second to think about the well-being of our most precious belongings. According to this incredibly informative article from Rowing News, “when it comes to longer periods between use, it turns out that what’s best is to store it with approximately 40-60 percent charge and recharge the battery back to 40-60 percent every three months” for cox boxes.

An article called "Electronics 101" placed on top of cox boxes and their headsets.
I think I’ve read this article about five times now and learn something new each time (maybe I should read more thoroughly).

Per our club management’s request, I took all our cox boxes home except for one that one of the coaches uses to charge the battery for their megaphone. I started the battery draining process about 45 minutes ago. Some of the boxes still look full while a few has one less bar than when we started. That’s about all I am going to do today.

Hopefully I get my task done before Team Fiancé returns so I can clean up the area!

Other maintenance tasks I’d like to complete before I return them to the boat house are cleaning the cases and bags (Oh, they are filthy!) and doing an inventory because I can tell you right now that the number of headsets, batteries, and boxes do not match up… Hmm…

And yes, I would like to clean the cox boxes as well, and if you have any tips on how you clean your boxes, I would appreciate it! Here’ the textbook version thanks to Nielsen-Kellerman.
